Two criminals were also crucified that day, one on each side of Jesus. They deserved to be punished because they did bad things. The Gospel of Matthew and Mark write that both criminals mocked Jesus and Luke writes that one of them repented, he admitted he was guilty.
Jesus said to him:
Today you will be with me in paradise.
When Jesus was on the cross, the soldiers divided His clothes by casting lots. In the afternoon a great darkness came over the land, because the Son of God on the cross took on Him the sins of the people. During those hours, Jesus suffered the wrath and punishment of God over sin. We can not understand how big Jesus’s suffering was. It was so big, that He shouted,
My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?
