The Jewish leaders were happy because Pilate gave His permission to crucify Jesus. Jesus was made to carry a heavy cross and due to the beating He suffered, His strength was weakened and He fell down. Therefore the soldiers asked Simon to carry Jesus’ cross. He was a strong man, he was from Cyrene, in north Africa, and was maybe going to Jerusalem.
