Although Pilate was thinking of letting Jesus go, he changed his mind when the people began to cry out:

If you let this man go, you are not friends with Caesar.

These words frightened Pilate because he did not want to fall into Caesar's disgrace, but he also did not want to be responsible for Jesus' death.
