Jesus took bread, He prayed and gave thanks to God for it. He broke the bread and gave it to the disciples, saying:
Take and eat. This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me.
The Lord Jesus was telling them that what happened with the bread was the image of what would happen with His body.
Then He took the cup, prayed and gave thanks to God for it saying:
Take this and divide it among you. This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you.
Jesus was saying that the wine was the symbol of His precious blood that was poured for the sins of men.
The bread and wine are symbols of remembrance, not only for the disciples, but for all who follow Jesus. Since that time, all who love Jesus, meet together and take bread and wine and call this special moment, the Lord’s Supper.
