The nation of Israel needed to be rescued. They lived in a foreign country called Egypt. There were a million of them. The Egyptian ruler Pharaoh ordered that everyone must work for free. He sent guards and they forced the Israelites to work hard. When the Israelites were tired, the guards beat them to work harder.

The Israelites were troubled and cried out to God, “God, look at us. Rescue us.”
