This afternoon was supposed to be great. Luke was looking forward to it. They were supposed to go karting with the boys. This year he was finally old enough, so his mother let him go with the big boys. Luke was choosing the right clothes and imagined how he would ride. In his mind he heard the engine and saw himself turning the steering wheel around the bend. Just the right time for lunch. Why was the clock running so slow?

"Lunch!" his dad called. Luke ran up immediately and sat at the table promptly.

"Where's Mom?" Luke's sister Vicky asked, she was a preschooler.

"She felt sick, she had to lie down," her father replied.

"And who's going to the carnival with me?" Vicky jumped out of her chair.

"I'm leaving in the afternoon, only Luke could go with you," Dad said as he was pouring soup.

"No!" Luke shouted immediately, "I go karting with the boys!"

"But I have to go there. I already have my costume ready. And Lucy and I agreed… “

"Sit down for now," her dad stopped her, "we'll discuss it after lunch."

Dad had folded his hands and started to pray. Luke had also bowed his head, but noticed the tears streaming down Vicky's face. It was quite unfortunate that Mom got sick that very day. But then the clock caught his eye. The boys were supposed to come to pick him up in an hour exactly.
